The involuntary loss of urine is called urinary incontinence. This can be a debilitating
condition. Those suffering from this condition will often alter their lifestyles
to avoid public embarrassment. Long car rides or walks away from their homes are
often avoided. Aerobic classes are missed along with other strenuous physical
activities. The estimated expense related to urinary incontinence in the U.S.
is nearly 10 billion dollars a year.
FILLING PHASE
The urinary bladder collects ands stores urine until it can be emptied voluntarily.
When it is full, nerves in the bladder signal the brain. This is when a person
gets the the urge to urinate.
EMPTYING PHASE
During the emptying phase, the brain signals the strong bladder muscle to squeeze,
or to contract. At the same time, it signals the support muscles that surround
the urethra to relax and allow urine to pass through.
STRESS INCONTINENCE
When the muscles surrounding the urethra become weak and unable to remain completely
shut, even a small amount of stress created by everyday activities may cause urinary
leakage. You may experience a loss of urine when you:
Laugh...Cough or Sneeze...Exercise...Lift heavy objects.
